Battle of The Books – English Reading Competition Held at HKP Junior Secondary

To arouse students’ interests in reading English books extensively, HKP held the Battle of The Books (BOTB) Final Contest at the hall on March 12. This contest aims to encourage students to enjoy the fun of reading in English, as well as to enhance their English proficiency and literacy.

After rounds of elimination, the Champion of the contest went to S2D while the 1st and 2nd runners-up went to S1B and S3C. S2A, S2C and S3A received the merit award.

In the early stage of the contest, students were asked to read five books graded in different levels, including George's Marvelous Medicine, Stuart Little, Born Behind Bars, Charlotte's Web and Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. These books cover a range of themes and genres, from amazing adventures and magical worlds to real-life personal growth stories, helping students to expand the scope of reading.

In the final contest, students are required to understand the book more thoroughly, including dialogues between characters, key themes in the book and understanding of plot, character and background details.

The Battle of The Books Contest has not only provided a competitive platform for students, but it has also sparked students’ enthusiasm in reading in English. We believe that English Reading is not just a skill. It is joy and enlightenment which can accompany our students for a lifetime. HKP will continue to develop students’ English reading ability and literacy by holding similar activities in the future serving as platforms for students to showcase their talents.
